  1. In September 1776, the Continental Congress approved the uniform of the Marine Officers.  The description was spelled out in the following passage from “Marines in the Revolution”.

“ A Green Coat faced with white, Round Cuffs, Slash’d Sleeves and Pockets; with buttons round the Cuff, silver Epaulett on the right shoulder -- skirts turn’d back, buttons to suit the Facings.   White Waistcoat and Brieches edged with green, Black Gaiters & Garters.  Green shirts for the men if they can be procured.”

Although the uniform was approved, it was hard to come by.  Thus, the Continental Marines wore clothing they were recruited in or purchased from their own funds.
