What color walls with Chocolate couches, med-dark wood, and tan carpet?

I want to paint the walls in my living room. Our couches are chocolate brown, our tables are a medium colored wood. The room 'flows' into the computer area. Our style is somewhat traditional (I think?). We have black photo frames on the walls and tables. We were thinking of doing a light gray (that's the only color we both agree on). Do you think it would work well if we found a rug with brown & gray?? What color do you think we should choose?

gray would be nice but in choosing it, the overall palette is now somewhat, um, somber, therefore, my intuition says at least 70 percent of the accents in this room really ought to be as lively as possible. think vibrant, fruity. but back to your gray paint question, yeah, you can do gray!! i suggest buy xtra large paint chips ($4 each approx.) instead of the tiny freebie ones - you don't want to make a mistake on shade

I would think it would be really hard to match any shade of gray to chocolate browns.  I agree with the blue, but I would go with a robin's egg blue. It can be really gorgeous with brown or black. I would stay with the darker tones for the rug (shows less dirt) but go with the robin's egg blue for throws and pillows. Pick them first and have the paint mixed to match.  If you don't paint your black picture frames then I would paint my trim the same color as the walls.  Contrasting trim would tend to make the room too busy.

Since you're leaning towards a lighter gray tone to begin with, I would suggest one of the newer

  "silver-sage greens". This can be an excellent match to the other neutrals you have, the chocolate brown and black, & tans (mid-wood tones & carpet)

I would also suggest painting only the window wall, if you have one, and only one other wall adjacent to it-preferably the wall opposite to the entrance into your space. Painting a window wall -if have one-will visually draw the eye out & "expand" the space-the "silver sage green" will complement the "nature tones", any plants/trees seen from the windows outside. Painting any wall directly across from a room's entrance-draws the eye in & around-allowing for further "expansion".  Also since space is combined,open to computer area, paint one wall (back wall?) as well. For the other walls-I'd suggest a neutral cream/latte'-just compare samples side by side.

The main thing to remember is paint is an easy inexpensive way to change up the look of a room-get a small can sample-paint it on the wall (s) of choice-live with it/ look at it throughout several days, at different times, to see how

daylight/lamp light changes it, etc...what's the worst that could happen? -You paint the walls-look at it a yr. or 2 down the road-then wonder "what was I thinking?" so repaint! By then you should be a "somewhat pro" and the next painting shouldn't take at long as the first time around!

And unless you are needing to "hide" trouble spots on the carpet-don't put down a rug -that would only serve to "ground/weigh/ bring the eye back down". The idea is to keep the eyes upward and moving around to make the most of any size space.

I would highly recommend bringing in an accent color into the room. A third color to needed to "lighten" things up. Bring in small pottery pieces, you could choose the robins egg blue color mentioned previously,  & select different patterned pillows with the accent color for the couches. Other 3rd colors' to consider-periwinkle blue or a citrus green. This third color, whichever you choose should be used sparingly throughout the combined area.

Have fun, choose what "speaks to you" and you can't go wrong-it should be a reflection of you and your interests!

I think a very light blue would look great and then get a rug that matches so it ties to the room all together

how about painting the walls a tan or beige and doing one accent wall in a brick red. that may be a little too non-traditional for you though. I do not think grey would be a good choice though. Blue would work if you could agree on that. Happy Painting!

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. I think a pale yellow like "ionic ivory" (# 6406) would look terrific with all of the neutrals that you already have.
