  1. what is a wake?

  2. all dark conservative colors which include, charcoal, navy, and olive...

  3. The general rules of Etiquette say dark colors such as black, brown, navy blue or charcoal gray (for suits).  You should avoid colors such as red or pastels as in some cultures they are thought of as "happy" colors and could be an insult or "slap" in the face to the family of the deceased.  Be neat and tidy are most important.  No jeans or t-shirts at all.

    Peace & Love :)

  4. Muted colors. Obviously you don't want to wear anything bright and vibrant, as it suggests cheerfulness.

gray, navy, brown, khaki, dark colors.

  5. Color isn't as important as style.  You want to look put together and conservative.  Jeans with tears, rips, holes, or wear marks are unacceptable.  Tank tops or shirts that show belly are out of the question.  "Graphic" t shirts are a no no, as well as anything with stains.

My grandfather passed away last month at 100 years of age.  After his service, we planned a "celebration of life" party (It was originally supposed to be a birthday party, but he passed a couple days before his birthday).  At the service, people wore nice dresses, pants and shirts, most with bright happy colors, floral prints, and what not.  I myself chose a white knee length dress embroidered with flowers.  Even my grandmother, his wife, wore navy pants and a matching jacket with pink flowers and a pink shirt underneath.

General rule I'd say, is dress in your Sunday best.

  6. I have rarely worn black, but I use very Conservative clothing at a wake. Nothing tight fitting, nothing gangster.

Any Wake I go to I make sure I look as professional as if I were a corporate Lawyer.Color is not a problem, looking like you are going out Clubbing just because it is the only black thing you own is a HUGE problem!

Modesty and decorum at wakes is more important than color coding!

  7. any calm colors like gray, black, white, blue will do, but try to avoid the loud colors like orange, red, or anything that sticks out.

  8. Gray, dark brown, navy...Gray is the better of these choices.

  9. Anything conservative, sophisticated, classic- nothing flashy

  10. Anything not too grungy or casual or peppy and cheerful.  Subdued colors would be fine.

  11. Subdued, muted colors usually. I've worn tan, navy, maroon, rust,a deep purple.Just be tasteful.

Although it does also depend on the family. Some people I know would rather have you wear a happy color to celebrate the person's life. I actually just went to a wake and funeral last week that we all tried to wear red, the brighter the better. My fiancees uncle who had Down's Syndrome would never wear any color shirt except red.So, to honor him we all wore his favorite color. The priest even draped the pew he always sat in with red.

If you know the family well,I would suggest finding out from someone what the prefered wardrobe should be.

  12. Traditionally, any somber color.  However, today, some people choose to celebrate the deceased person's life rather than their death, and dress in that person's favorite color.
