Question:

What colors should I use to go with my fiance's kilt?

My fiance and I are planning an October wedding and we are trying to figure out our colors:

1. He is going to be wearing a kilt with this tartan: http://www.uniq-orn.com/tartans/minnesota.html

(Sorry I don't have a picture of an actual kilt, but you can see the tartan pattern and the colors...)

2. I look best in warm colors and we want the wedding to have a warm, natural feel -- especially since it is going to be autumn.

We like the color combo of green and purple (also, my birthstone is emerald and his is amethyst) and so we were thinking of using the green and the purple from the tartan and maybe accenting with some gold to give it more warmth.

Any other ideas? Tips for decor that goes with the kilt without overdoing it?

  1. The saphire blue would be really pretty too. I went to a wedding that was saphire and it was pretty. You could even add a sash to the dress in a gold if you wanted. Or pick up gold linens or gold flowers. Good luck and Congrats

  2. Since the lavender is the color of the plant, and Scotland is covered with the stuff, that is a good choice. I like the green, it is pretty. I'd say pick two colors off the kilt to match dresses to, and you would be fine. If you wish, and you like bright, match them all

The green and gold are both warm, they would look good together, too.

  3. Go with the violet. That way you can wear all of the emerald jewelry you want, and it'll look great!

  4. (1) You're going to get a lot of answers to your questions from different people who will tell you (2) a lot of different things.  So now you're faced with (3) which answer should I pick?  The answer to that is (4) the one you like best.

Ergo I recommend that you stop by some bridal shops and talk to the employees.  They have TONS and TONS of experience in this realm and can speak from personal experience instead of just picking an answer out of a hat.

Ditto for your flowers, the wedding and reception decor, etc., etc., etc.  Feel free to check out any of the multiple publications for "Brides," too.

    Good luck!

  5. I love the idea of green & purple and don't forget to have some Scottish heather in your bouquet.

  6. I don't know if many "warm" autumn colours will go with that tartan, but the green and/or purple would be really nice.  I think you should focus on the green, as to not overdo the matchy-matchy thing too much (there are a lot of bold colours in that kilt).

Is her wearing the kilt for a family clan?  Because some clans have multiple colour combos, so if you really wanted warm fall colours for your wedding you might be able to find a different colour combo kilt in the same tartan pattern that is still the clan tartan.  I know my families tartan has 2 or 3 different colour combos.

    Good Luck!

  7. Picking up one pr two predominant colors in his kilt is a great way to accent your dress and pull together your entire wedding. Consider wearing a colored sash with long tails and think about wearing shoes to match the sash. Dress your bridesmaids  in the  chosen color but have them wear metallic gold shoes ( they can wear them again!)

We're using family tartans for our wedding, so I have some of the same concerns but with two tartans! feel free to email if you  like

you didn't say if he wore the dress tartan :)
