I have a medium gray couch, black entertainment center, black coffee table with glass top. I would like to add some color to my living room,a rug and pillows too, wondering what colors would go well with black and gray?

  1. you can pop up your room with touches of red, light yellow and cream and white.  this could look very modern and unique.  just don't over do it.  It could be an area rug in these color combinations and lamps, curtains, candles, picture frames.  here is a modern inspiration:

  2. I guess it depends on which colors you like - neutral or cool. I love earth colors and I think rust/reds look great with black and gray. If you're into more muted tones you could paint the walls a neutral like sand and do pops of a gray/blue in the pillows, rugs, accessories. This site from hgtv has so many ideas.

  3. Most grays are either blue or brown. So if your grey has a bluish hue, go with cool colors - like blue or white or colors that contrast with blue (orange, yellow). If its brown-grey go with warm colors - brown or beige or colors that contract to brown - green, mauve. Black will go with anything but cool colors like white and blue and the contrasting colors will become high contrast and won't look good unless the space and look you're going for is modern.

  4. Red, gold or tuquoise

  5. Lemon yellow, coral, or a light turquoise/aqua balance the masculine/feminine energies in the room and counteract the depressive effects of black & gray.  Yellow is especially good for counteracting the depressiveness of black, gray and dark blue.  Red is too strong.  White, gray & black is too monochromatic and becomes very tedious.

  6. Since black and gray are neutral, almost any color would go with them.  You didn't mention the color of your walls or flooring; are they neutral too?

Insofar as styling, it sounds as though your furnishings are contemporary.  Colors that lend themselves well to that look are shades of red and/or orange.

You can use the colors together or separately.  Here's a contemporary area rug with both colors in them in an earth-tone version:

You can also go very bold - as in these throw pillows:

    Then compliment with contemporary lamps:

These are only examples, but I've always loved the way red tones (red, rust, burgundy, plum) interact with gray and black.

    Hope this was helpful ~
