I'm going to keep the walls the same color, very light beige, but I'm not sure on the cabinets and counter, they seem really bland. What would look better?

  1. use accessories to make the neutral background pop--go red/orange with poppies or roosters or apples. Or go with cobalt blue and lime green. You can add dish towels, potholders, cutting boards, bowls, pitchers, kitchen accessories in bright colors that will change the look. Throw rugs are small but can add a great accent. Right now all your accessories are black. You can put some great color boxes, bowls, or baskets on top of the cabinets. put a tile or laminated picture above the sink.

  2. I would go bright Yellow to give light and matching curtains and bowls etc.

  3. i think changing the counter and floors would have the most impact. the easiest thing would be to reconsider painting the walls...beige? are you sure? :)

  4. I've seen far worse as far as cabinets and counters.  Why not try painting the walls, adding some area rugs, some display items on top of the top cupboards?  You can bring a lot of color and punch to the party very inexpensively this way!  Since the cabinets are of a warm tone, I'd stay with a warm toned paint but a green, a light cocoa brown,  dusty yellow, terracotta would all look great!  Then add some accessories with that same color and complimenting colors and I think you'll be quite pleasantly surprised!

And I would suggest a different light fixture.  Maybe even a nice ceiling fan with a light fixture on it?  And or changing the handle on the cabinets and drawers to something with more substance?

  5. black and red always looks good in kitchens in my opinion. maybe darker colored cabinets or dark marble counter tops tho they can get pricey, dark colors can contrast the the walls well and if you dont want to change the wall colors i recommend it.

  6. My kitchen looked the same when we moved in.  I had fun decorating it.  I liked the idea of a green and white checkered border and red apples.  So I got a stencil at the craft store for a couple bucks, and a couple bottles of craft paint for a buck a piece, and painted green checks and red apples around the top of the walls.  You could find a border you like-ivy, Coke bottles, grapevines, etc. and paint it very easily above your cupboards or just below them.

The spot above the sink would be great for a cute picture in whatever color scheme you choose.  And find a cute throw rug to put in front of the sink.

You could also put some fake green vines or plants on top of the cupboards to fill the dead space there.

Doing all of those things would cost less than $100, saving tons of money over replacing cabinets and countertops.  Although you could paint the cabinet doors-my sister painted hers a brick red and sanded them down a little to look antiqued, like a barn.  She has roosters and cows as accents-on wall hangings, decorative plates, towels, rugs, etc.

    Have fun!!

  7. You need some color in there! Painting the walls will be the easiest and get something to hang in that space above the sink. Find a theme that you like and go with it. You can get some nice frames at dollar tree and even some prints. Pick a color out of one of the prints for your wall color.

  8. Is this a rental?  Talk about basic colors!  If color change is all the budget will allow.....and I hear that!.......is there a color you can pick up from an adjoining room?  Do you have a picture you could hang above the sink......cheap and water proof and sizable.....and then pick out a color from that.

Then we have the counter.  If you are not a rental, it doesn't cost much to change out the counter to a laminate that mimics granite.  Granite or other stone is very expensive.

Then the light.  If you are not a rental, change out the single overhead to several ceiling recessed lights.  And what's with the ceiling texture??

Normally I'd suggest throwing a rug over the Great White Way you call the floor, but a latex backed rug may stain the tile.......hmmmm.

If you are still up for beige........make it a medium tone.....not a play on white. You have white in the floor and appliances.  Ceiling should remain white but that strip above the cabinets goes with the wall color.  At least then the black items won't be so lost in the room.
