Question:

What colors would you use in a living room with white walls, gray carpets, and a black table?

I just moved into a new apartment, and am in the process of getting furniture and decorating it. The apartment has white walls, huge windows, high ceilings (think schoolhouse ceilings and windows, as it used to be a schoolhouse). It also has gray carpets.

I always imagined having warm earth tone colors in my living room - so that I could have a warm, welcoming environment. So, having gray carpets posed a challenge for me, as I've never dealt with cool color tones before. I decided to get this black glass square table for the dining room, which is essentially part of the living room. It looks very sleek and contemporary. Here's a picture of it (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80131733). Note that the glass top is solid black. The white that's shown on the glass in the picture is just a reflection. I'd like to incorporate that black into the room - perhaps creating a contemporary, yet classic and welcoming atmosphere? I don't want it to be too contemporary, and I don't want the black to be overpowering, but I would like it all to tie together.

Anyways, to sum this up, any suggestions for colors of furniture (couch, chair, accent tables) or decorations (wall hangings, art, frames, etc) would be much appreciated. Keep in mind that I can't paint the walls, and I can't change the color of the carpet.

Thanks in advance!

  1. you will need to decide on the sofa first , like navy blue ,purple, red, black , yellow, orange, green, all these colours would go good with grey  carpet, you will need to pick a colour from the fabric that there is on the sofa , unfortunately I 'm not able to open the link that you have sent , I will look if I can find something to give you an idea. l

  2. you can still use those warm tones you like...try a large warm red sofa or chair...red is pretty neutral. accent with orange and yellow pillows. try to find an area rug that has those tones in it, plus the black, gray, white.  spread the warm colors around the room and keep in mind which you want to be dominant and which are accents to keep everything balanced.
