Depends. I've seen gold and red, silver and red, all silver (Mark 2), and all gold.

Ok, here is the answer,

The suit has changed over time.  The original suit that Tony Stark created was all silver.  (Tales of Suspense #39, 1963 )  It was bulky and not sleak at all.  Eventually, Stark upgraded the suit and changed its colors to red and gold. (Tales of Suspense #48, 1963).  The red and gold suit was upgraded several times, but didn't change colors.  

Eventually, Tony Stark became an alcoholic and gave up the suit to James Rhodes.  When Stark took over as Iron Man again, he changed it to Red and Silver.  

I believe James Rhodes eventually became Iron Man's partner, War machine (black suit???).  I also believe that there were various incarnations of the armor in all gold, all black, all titanium blue, etc.  

Man, I really was a comic geak as a kid!
