The answer would depend on who you ask.

Religious people would say the hen came first because God created the hen.

Some others would say the egg. I dunno. I read somewhere that before there were hens, there were the 'ancestors' of the hens: the dinosaurs. It seems that a certain type of dinosaur kinda evolved as time passed, and when it laid its eggs, the hen came out.

Someone asked me that question when I was in junior high. And I answered, "Both came first, depending on the theory you are looking into."

I think it was the hen. Heres why:

Religiously (stop the boo-ing) the adult came before their children, like in the adam and eve story.

Scientifically, an egg can't survive without being warmed (or incubated) by the mother. It would have died before it was hatched.
