the egg, so it could hatch into a chicken.  in terms of evolutionary theory, the dinosaur which carried the mutation that would become what we know as chickens had to lay the egg that hatched the bird/mutation that became the chicken.

the egg because the dinosaur had the egg and it hatched into a chicken which layed more eggs making more chickens which make more eggs that hatch into chickens that lay eggs making chickens that lay eggs that will hatch and make egg laying chickens that lay more eggs causing the birth of more chickens that lay eggs to make more chickens.

there is an error in the question:) of course the egg was the first, because dinosaurs used eggs to propagate before chickens were evolved. But if you would ask: "what comes first the chicken, or the chicken egg" I couldn't answer

An egg is a single cell so you would think that came first...then again a chicken could've evolved from some other creature then began laying eggs...plus the single cell (the egg) needs to be fertilized by a chicken to become a chicken so ...who knows?
