the way i have always seen it is in a religious context:

if you are christian you would believe that God made the chicken, and so the chicken came first.

if you believe in science, however, people generally agree that the egg had to come first. as the organism that eventually evolved into the modern chicken had to have laid an egg that was the first "chicken". but this is where it get's hazy because you have to define where exactly in time the "chicken" came into existance, and where the animal before the chicken ceased to exist... tough one!!

as an atheist, though, i believe it had to be the egg that came first.

chickens probably evolved from some other organism . it happened when that organism layed the egg which hatched the chicken.
