My son and his group are planning to get involved in community service. Which ones are important for colleges? They are a group of about 16-20.

I thought about the Food Bank & Habitat for Humanity.......what else would be good?

  1. Any and all, its about what you want to do.  Its about passion, its about belief in something.  Its about seeing something through because you felt you were the only who could do it.

Anything you do with that kind of passion will be well understood in your essay to the college.

For me I chose animals specifically horse rehabilitation.  I also fundraise and ride for a cure to MS.  I'm not talking about a small amount of money.  I raise $10,000 per year for each ride.  It takes alot of planning and communication.  However when i started i just raised 500.00.  Once you catch the bug you'll improve your methods and your passion will grow.

    good luck.

  2. Those are great, basically any volunteer work is gonna look good.

There's also the Red Cross, maybe they could clean the office, do filing or something. If it's not too big of an office.

I volunteered at mine, as a secretary answered phones, scheduled CPR classes, typed letters, (no formal training) while I was in college.

I was accepted at Penn State with no community service, in my background, but I did have a few summer jobs, that were like community service. Cleaned local schools, and got paid through what was then called the J.T.P.A. program.
