What compact or subcompact cars are good commuter vehicles?

How about the Trek Portland or a similar bicycle made specifically for commuters???  A fraction of the cost, gets excellent gas mileage.  No insurance required and you can cancel your gym membership and eat pretty much anything you want.

Babe magnet?  You bet.  After about six months of commuting, go to the beach wear shorts and take off your shirt.  Nice, huh?  That's what 10-15 miles per day on cycle at a moderate pace will earn you.

Safety?  That's up to you but the percentages are still in favor of cyclists.

Just sayin!

I have a Honda Fit and I think it's probably the best car in it's catagory.  Check out the comparison test they did at Car and Driver magazine. They compared 7 of these sub compact cars. They said:

"The Fit is sold in more than 70 countries and is known in Europe as the Jazz. It debuts at C/D in typical Honda show-off fashion, winning by 25 points — a cakewalk. "

If safety is your issue, than go for the VW Jetta or the Honda civic. Both of these cars got raving safety awards, and they are totally fun to drive. I own a VW myself, and it saved my life. Plus, they both get just under 30MPG on the city :)

The Corolla is also a  good choice, but keep in mind that without the side airbags, its one of the worst cars on safety, and even with the airbags, i wouldn't trust it too much. It's the best commuter car out there though, minus the cheap interior, and the souless driving, you won't lose money driving this car

Honda Civic - you can consider the Hybrid if you want the highest  mileage. It is rated one of the best cars by several sources.

They're all pretty good, until you get into an accident.  Because depending upon what hits you or how fast you were going.

They all are about the same as stepping on an empty beer can.

They tend to be nicely squishibly as long as you weren't in it.

Its sad but true.

Honda Fit, HOnda Civic, Mazda 3, Nissan Versa, HOnda Accord EX (4 cyl) are all excellent.
