What company do you have your health insurance through?

We currently have BCBS medical insurance with dental and the price keeps going up and up. I am seriously thinking about switching companies. Can anyone recommend a company that I can switch to?

Years ago we had a insurance where we got a prescription card and access to a 1-800 # where we could call an talk to a nurse anytime. All we ever paid was our co-pays at the doctor's office and the insurance was great.

We have had BCBS for years now and after we pay our co-pays we get little bills here and there. We have no prescription card and we are paying A LOT for insurance each month.

Any suggestions?

  1. Depends on what state you live in.

I recommend finding a local agent that you can trust (like me)! In Colorado, with 9 carriers offering over 250 plans, the brain damage you would have sorting them all out would be serious. Tell the agent what kind of policy you are looking for, and then take a serious look at the details of what (s)he recommends. Also have a good look at HSA's. You could save a lot of money.

  2. You should get with my agent at http://www.lvhealthins.com  They have been great they constantly requoted my policy each year with about 29 different companies to get me the best rates and coverages.  They are very helpful when it comes time to renew of filing a claim.

  3. Depends on where you live.  Blue Cross is a different entity in every state (although there is some overlap).  In California Blue Cross is a Wellpoint company and Blue Shield is a separate, completely unrelated company.  So, to say BlueCross is good without mentioning the state really does you no good.

And Assurant and United Healthcare/GoldenRule are good, but they also have states where they are and aren't competitive.

You can try getting quotes off my site.  It works in 14 different states anyway and doesn't ask anything invasive.

  4. Try Assurant Health, and Golden Rule Ins. Co. Both can be Googled.

  5. Mine's with Cigna

EVERYONE'S insurance is going up.  Utilization, according to Consumer Reports, in 2005, was about $500 per month, for every man, woman, and child in the USA.  Nowadays, the average family plan costs about $1200 a month, which is less than utilization.

Feel free to shop around.  BCBS is one of the better companies.  But cheaper ONLY means, cutting coverages, or increasing deductibles.
