What compels cats to scratch on the posts?

They are filing their claws down, so they aren't so long. If they don't their claws will catch on things like the carpet in your house.

Well, you cut your nails don't you? For a cat their claws is their defense so the scratch post, couch, carpet, tree helps the cat sharpen its claws and it keeps them from getting dull and at the same time they are marking their territorry! 3 in 1! It the fabric texture. My cat has two scratching posts and he still prefers the carpet. They are sharpening their claws and scenting their territory.

I am guessing they like the feel. It is very natural for them to be sharpening up their nails and it probably feels good for them to be scratching the post up.
