I'm a 30 year old ex-state cyclist and fencer. Since I'm already so old, what type of sports that I could train up to be competitive enough in national level?

I was thinking maybe archery. What kinda skills are SUBSTANTIALLY required in archery? Good eye and hand coordination? Concentration?

  1. GOLF.

  2. It depends on which type of archery, Olympic style or Compound.  At the top levels, compound archery is more mental while olympic style is more physical.

The ability to relax is very important with archery, some coordination is good, but it can be trained.  You do need to have good body awareness, but coming from fencing I don't think you'll run into a problem there.

As with other shooting sports, when you shoot a bow you need to cut down on as much tension as possible.  The more muscle you use, the more variable you throw into the pot and more things can go wrong.  This is where relaxation is important.  The release in recurve/olympic style archery is done with your fingers, this is where relaxation on demand is paramount. The human muscles are built to tense up on demand but not the other way around.  Relaxing the muscles are done at leisure, but not in archery.

  3. Try swimming
