  1. XM and Sirius are merging so I guess you could say they out maneuvered consumers =)

Prior to the merger I would've answered that the primary strategy  was trying to sign big named talent. Sure you have Nascar and other specialty-type shows but the proven ratings-generating shows from radio (Stern, Bubba, etc) have been the backbones of both companies and they've consistantly expanded on that since their birth. That's helped give them a marketable product -- which has helped make XM or Sirius radios standard in new autos and even portable sat. radios are starting to become popular (kind of like the walkman).

  2. None. Right now they're just trying to stay alive long enough for the merger to go through. The DoJ has decided not to intervene and leave the matter to the FCC and FTC. This removes (at least temporarily) one hurdle they faced.

However, if the merger is denied, both services will continue to do what they've been doing - and what is most important. That is signing deals with auto manufacturers and those that make other potential receiving devices (cellphones, home theatres, etc).

It's not the individual subscriber they're most interested in - it's the BIG deals that can put the service in the hands of millions of individuals.
