see i wanted a good home sound system, just for music cds. I dont know really what to get. i know you need a amplifier, EQ, and obviously some speakers and cd tape player but i dont know how to choose them. Does it all depend on watt power?

How do i know which EQ/Amp is good quality? can someone advise me on which ones are good

  1. First - I am more about Home Theater than music. So take my advice with a grain of salt.

Highly sensitive music systems are a bit different from HT. But if I was advising you, here is what I would recommend:

SPEAKERS: These are the most important part and each speaker has a different flavor. So it is real important to audition with a CD of music you love so you can tell how it sounds.

I would recommend you look into Ribbon or ElectroStatic speakers. These are large, thin speakers that have huge surface area and are capable of great detail and accuracy.  My audiophile friends are into these. Just note: you need a external subwoofer for these.

I would suggest you look into Magnapan and Martin Logan as brands.

For the subwoofer, check out SVS Subwoofers or HSU Subwoofers.

ELECTRONICS:  The higher end systems are pre/amp systems. The electronics are in 1 box called the "pre processor" and feed external 2,3,5 channel amplifiers. The amps can be mono-blocks, or huge $2,500 multi-channel amps that need a fork-lift to move around.

With these - you can start with 2 monoblocks with 150 watts each and grow.

A budget-but-good brand is an internet only company called "Outlaw Audio". They sell pre-amp systems that are about the same price as mid-range receivers.

I have put some links below to help out.

  2. u shud buy creative subwoofer system 7.1 is latest and is best  or try bose systems (rockinggg)

  3. Felics -

I won't tell you what to buy, but I will tell you that if you are near any urban area, you can get a simple, high-performance system at virtually any price range that will easily outperform the mass market products that they sell in the big-box stores or over the internet.  Find a couple of hi-fi shops, and visit them.  They should be able to give you a demonstration in a home-like environment that shows you exactly what kind of performance you will get at home.  Find the store and the system that's right for you, and buy with confidence!

  4. You really have a lot of options. It really depends on your budget. Let us know what your budget is and all of us who like to answer these questions and help will give you some good advise to sift through. Edit your question and add how much money you want to spend.  Just ignore the guys who are trying to tell you to buy Wilson Audio speakers and other stuff that cost $100,000.  Your ears will never know how expensive they are.

I don't want to give you a bunch of ideas you can't afford. it is a waste of your time and it isn't answering your question.
