Glucose sugar is used by all the organisms as main energy source.  Break down of glucose to CO2 and H2O releases energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is converted into ADP (adenosine diphosphate).  The breakdown of glucose occurs during respiration. This reaction thus releases energy (ATP) which is used by  the plants for all the metabolic processes required for the growth. Growth of the plants involves cell division, cell elongation, cell differentiation, tissue differentiation etc etc.
