  1. it honestly doesn't matter...as long as there is tons of room on the drive for all the extra pics.....

I'm a professional photographer..and at first wanted an imac...but I have a dell with tons of extra space....and 24 inch screen

  2. I have both (well, not exactly. But I'll explain later)

The Macbook is great for it's portability.  Mine has 160 gig HD and only 1 gig of RAM.  But I run a full version of Photoshop with no problems and have plenty of onbaord storage.

Right now - since I'm on the road in Hawaii for three months - the Macbook is all I have to work with, so I'm getting used to doing major Photoshop work with it.

Normally, back home in Florida, where my backyard studio is, I do my major work on a 20 inch Apple Cinema Display - which is comparable to the 20" iMac.  It's connected to my main Mac - an ancient G4.  Nowhere near as slick and fast as a new iMac.  but it gets the job done - and HAS for almost nine years!

The G4 is running dual internal 120 HDs, only 1 gig of RAM and 1Mhz processor.

I also use several external hard drives to back up both these systems - an absolute necessity!

  3. As most of the others said it doesn't really matter. Both would do the job. I personally use two HP computers. One laptop and one desktop. If you will be doing any editing in Photoshop I find it much easier to do on the desktop. The screen is larger and the mouse is more accurate. It also drives me crazy to have a bunch of things plugged into a laptop with the wires going everywhere.

Whichever you choose make sure you get plenty of RAM and a large hard drive. You will also need a portable hard drive.

  4. It does not matter really.

If you have extensive skills using a Mac, then stay with Mac.  If all your expertise is using a Windows based computer, don't change and waste time learning a new operating system.  Time is what you use to shoot images.

If you are a pro, you will be using both ... a desktop and notebook.  I carry a  notebook to every shoot with a 500 GB external drive and a bunch of CD-R's and DVD+/-R's.

  5. Tough call. I'd say they're about equal. More a question of how much desk space you plan to use, and if you want to take your computer on the go.

    Hope it helps.

  6. I think that you can do either. Im a photographer and I have a macbook but I have a external hard drive that I store everything on so that it doesn't bog down my computer. I would keep an external hard drive anyways on either computer just to back up everything.. it will make you computer stay fast on not slow if down with thousands of images. Also you can take you images to any mac that way.. say if you wanted to get something printed. BUT if you have a desktop you can calibrate it for the light in the room and never have to worry about your images looking differently in different lights, the way you would with a laptop. So a short version of my answer was either.. but back up everything with an external hard drive either just for backing up purpose or so your main computer stays running well. Good luck!
