Umm... for dairy farming? You need cows, a barn, milking supplies... any type of weather conditions, as long as the cows are in the barn. Dairy farming is considered to be milking cows, not going out and planting something.

All the things mentioned are very important to dairy farming.  The most important part of dairy farming are the people.  Dairy farming requires total dedication from all members of the farming team.  Priorities must be set, the cows come first.  You must love what you are doing and it doesn't hurt to have a heritage in the farm, generations of farming in your  blood.  Are you willing to live with few days off, and hardly a penny extra at the the end of the month.  I have lived my whole life on this farm, and the good Lord willing this is where I will stay.  As one answer stated, "I finally got smart and got out of it."  I hate to think you are calling me dumb. . .maybe only the smart, survive in this life style.

First off, the things you list are really insignificant.  More importantly, you need a market.  Having the buildings, cows, labor, feed, etc means nothing if you don't have a local market for the milk.  Trucking is very expensive and having a bulk truck come from 100 miles away eats up money.

Milking systems are very expensive, require much labor and time.  If you want a vacation to last anymore than an afternoon, don't get into dairying because you have to be there morning and night.

As far as the things you list, proper management can overcome or at least allow you work around all of them.  That's why you find dairy operations from the desert regions of California to the frigid winter winters of Wisconsin.
