What conditions need higher iso's on a camera?

I BOUGHT A CANON SD 1000 AND THE PICS DONT LOOK THAT GOOD THE HIGHEST THE ISO HAS GONE IS 400 I TRIED PHOTOS IN REAL DARK ROOMS AND IN BRIGHT CONDITIONS, TRIED WITH CAMERA RESET IN DEFAULT. MY OLD CANON 530 TAKES BETTER PICS. MY NIECE HAS THE SD1000 AND HER PICS LOOK GOOD, THANKS

    As you can see just buying a newer model does not necessarily produce better images.

    Low light without flash is when you use the higher ISO settings.

    Low ISO's are the best when shooting in bright sun or using the flash ... they have the least noise and the best colour saturation.

    In your case, you actually lost a little ground when you "upgraded"

    For sure you lost when you went from a 4x to a 3x optical zoom

    Too bad you didn't buy the SD1100 IS  at least you would have image stabilization.
