What constitutes getting a Hold for a pitcher in a MLB game?

  1. It's the criteria as a save, but the pitcher can't be the last pitcher.

    So, if you qualify for a save, but then are relieved and the game doesn't change hands, you get a hold.

    It's an equally useless stat (along with the modern day save), but it good for fantasy leagues.


  2. According to STATS, Inc. a hold "... is credited any time a relief pitcher enters a game in a Save Situation, records at least one out, and leaves the game never having relinquished the lead."

    This definition comes from the STATS Baseball Scoreboard: 1996.  Notice that a pitcher cannot get a hold unless he leaves the game before the game is over.  You cannot finish a game and also get credit for a hold.  You'd get credit for a save instead.
