Is it part of Australia? If it is that would contradict the popular belief that Australia is both a country and continent.

Is it part of Asia?? That would make New Zealand citizens Asains which sounds weird.

What do you think?

  1. None.  New Zealand is not part of any continent; it's a major island group.  "Oceania" is not a continent in the strictest sense; it's a geographical region used to lump together Australia + all the various surrounding island chains.

  2. New Zealand is part of Oceania

  3. The "continent" of Australia/Oceania is a somewhat artifical construct, designed to link together the continental landmass of Australia with the huge number of widely scattered islands across the Pacific Ocean.

This would include the Kiwis of New Zealand.

  4. Australia

  5. New Zealand is an "isolated" island group in the Pacific.

It is not part of a continent, but IS part of the region known as "Oceania", which contains the nation-continent of Australia. Oceania fills the place of a continent, in some respects, by "collecting" the Pacific islands into a group with Australia.

  6. We are not part of Australia.  Not even a little bit.  :-)  Close neighbours but that's it.  Not remotely part of Asia either.  We are a completely separate, independent country in the SW Pacific.

NZ , Australia, PNG, and other Pacific Islands, together are known as Australasia (within Oceania).  However, each is entirely separate from the other.

New Zealand citizens are New Zealanders.  Colloquially knows as 'Kiwis'.
