If looking at the effect of temperature on the activity of catalase (potato) what would the control be?

1. Cold environment (ice-cubes)

2. Hot environment (water bath)

both with same amount of homogenate, water and hydrogen peroxide for the same amount of time.

  1. i would say neither because the control group is the group not receiving the factor being tested. In this case it would be temperature, and both these groups apply a temperature to the potato

  2. As mentioned, there really is no control group. You should however add the ambient temperature group. You can then perform a 3-way ANOVA with temperature being the Independent Variable (3 levels) and the catalase activity as the Dependent Variable.

  3. A control would be where you are adding nothing that would affect the potato. So i would say yeah just use room temperature
