Question:

What convertibles are safe?

I want a convertible, and I heard in an answer to a previous question that some of them come with a safety feature where safety bars automatically pop up in an accident, in case you flip over. If this is true, what cars come with this feature?

  1. I dont know of any off hand but a very safe convertible will be the Mini Cooper.

  2. Jeep Wranglers are safest! We did our research because we wanted a convertible! they have 2 sets of roll bars and they have side protection. We came across a video while researching and it was amazing! A lot of cars crushed and ripped their top off, while the jeeps top had multiple places it even stayed on!!! But a jeep not only is it a convertible but it is a multi use valuable!

  3. Some cars come equipped with rollbars, others don't.

The only way to find out is to look at the vehicle and check with a local mechanic.

Of course if it is new then they should tell you

And if it is used it is always a good thing to have a mechanic check out the entire vehicle before you buy it

  4. A convertible is, by the nature of its design, a less safe vehicle compared to a hard-top, fixed roof vehicle.  However, with the addition of a roll bar, a convertible can be almost as good a fixed roof vehicle in the event of a roll over.

The problem will still be that your limbs or head could still be outside of the the roll cage in the event of a rollover or, using the same logic, outside objects can intrude into the cabin area as well.

Many convertible vehicles come either with a fixed rollbar or a set that will deply in the event of a rollover
