Question:

What cookbook would you recommend?

I am going to buy a cookbook for my boyfriends birthday. He's REALLY into cooking, but not into the whole Martha Stuart Foodnetworks/Emerils of the cooking scene. He's more in it for the independent chef's, fine dining, and art aspect of it. Something a little more mature than a How To Cook Great Meals in 15 minutes.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a cookbook to buy him? Thankyou.

  1. There is a cookbook called "The Silver Spoon" its huge its Italian and they have been publishing the same one for decades, it has a sister book that has 1000 Spanish recipes in it.  They are big clunky bible sized cookbooks and I take them to bed, around $70 Australian.

The book number for the italian one is:0-7148-4467-5.  Any really good cookbook shop should have one or know how to get one.  Culinaria also do fantastic cookbooks, really big, all done region by region in whichever country the book focuses.

  2. This book is great!  http://www.amazon.com/Prize-Recipes-Grea...

  3. joy or betty crocker..

  4. My favorite book is called The (New) Best Recipe. Now only does it tons of recipes in it, but it explains what makes certain recipes work over others. It's a great learning tool and the science behind the art is a fun addition to the delicious food!

    Here, check it out!

  6. Think outside the box a bit..

Instead of a cook book, you could buy him a book on herbs. Its usually has recipes in it and it gives you a complete list of herbs and spices and how to use them. Im a chef and got given something like this as a present. Its my bible!!

  7. The Way to Cook by Julia Child is a wonderful book by a great chef.  It has all you really need supplemented by splendid pictures.

A more basic book would be Joy of Cooking which, if you could only have one book, would be a good choice.

And for most beautiful and least practical (for the home cook) look at The French Laundry Cookbook by Thomas Keller.

  8. Find out who his favorite chef is then buy that book. Whatever his favorite restaurant is, ask that chef for a reccomendation.

  9. Sounds like he would enjoy Anthony Bourdain or a travel/ethnic related cook book.

  10. u should buy him like a Cambells How To....

  11. The Gourmet Cookbook

  12. French Farmhouse Cookbook . by Susan Herrmann Loomis..This is country french food...the true heart of it all...and my most valued cook book.

  13. Get the new one   The Art of Simple Cooking  by Alice Waters.  Terrific new book by one of the greatest chefs.

  14. You may consider "The Joy of Cooking". Has been around a long time

    and still extremely popular.

  15. The classic Better Homes and Gardens - Ringbound. I'm a guy. I cook, and have for 40 years. There's no book I've referred to more often. There's a new 12th Edition for 29.95 on Amazon. I haven't seen the new edition but that '60s Edition of mine has been great. The recipes are not too exotic but it has everything you need to develop basic cooking skills..

For recipes, bookmark Chef2Chef.com. A great resource for everything from basic 10-Minute meals to bulgogi, venison, and that simple & tasty ginger dressing from Benihana...
