I'm filling out a teaching application and I need some help with this question. I'm not looking for answers to add to my application, I need some ideas to help me get thinking of stuff.

  1. I would say something along the lines of instilling a love of learning, intellectual curiosity, self-directed learning, fostering collaborative skills, "authenticity," blah blah blah.

My advice is to use the right buzz words, but try to stand out with your voice.  Don't be afraid to let your personality come through in your cover letter and essays.

  2. To influence students lives... I try to repeatedly refocus students on expectations about behavior both in the classroom and polite society, I attempt to connect what they are learning to how it is used in the real world and how it is relevant to their path to college. I constantly add reinforcement and reminders that there is no task too hard and no student who is not capable of going to college or succeeding at the next level (I work in elementary). I hope that helps a little
