I was on craigslist a couple of weeks ago to find mechanics within my area. I found one not too far from my house so that towing wouldn't be such a hassle. I called a mechanic and asked how much would catatlic converters be and he gave me a price. I was informing him that I wasn't absolutely sure what was wrong with the car, but was assuming it was just the catatlic converters since someone else had told me. He immediately cut me off and told me to not worry and that he'd check everything. Since I couldn't drive the car, I needed for them to tow it and he said it would be a $75 flat rate. Later that week, he never told me that he actually "ordered" parts for the car. He told me that he would call to find out the actual prices of the parts and if they were in stock. About 5 or so days after the car got to the shop, he told me that I'd need a new engine. I inquired of the price and found out it was way out of my budget. I told him that I'd come get the car and try getting it repaired at a later time. He sounded VERY disappointed. I then asked him the price for the towing and vehicle inspection. He said he'd get the total, and give me a call back, but never called back. I decided to call the shop myself and asked a young lady about the total. She said she'd ask the mechanic and call me back. She called me back, informed me of the total and said the car was running. I asked for her positivity and told me the mechanic said it was running. Then I finally get to the shop and ask if I could drive the car before I pay and she said no because I wasn't allowed to drive it without a receipt. So I paid for it, walked over to the car and the mechanics were telling me that the car wasn't fixed! They told me that it needed a motor! I asked if they checked EVERYTHING out. They said no and was informed to just put the catatlic converters on the vehicle and assumed I was getting a motor from somewhere else. I then called the guy who handled the towing and explained the issue I had with him fixing something that wasn't going to make the car run. He tried to completely change the story saying that I told him to put the catatlic converters on the car when in all actuality I didn't. I told him that I wasn't sure if it were the catatlic converters, plus he never informed me that he put anything on the car. So I felt as though they did all of that just to gain my money. What could I do?

  1. Learn something about cars.In the first part you say you told him to put on a converter then (when that's not the problem) you say you didn't .Are you blaming the mechanic for your misdiagnosis ,or your poor communication skills??

  2. I hear these horror stories all the time and the best thing that I can tell you is to contact the Bureau of Automotive Repair. This is the agency that is set up to protect the consumer and protect the shop from a scam. Their job is to get at the truth and punish the bad guy. I've been a mechanic for a long time and can tell you from experience that they do a good job. They helped me when I was being scammed and I believe that they could help you too.
