What could I do to make my room look like it doesn't belong to an 8 year old?

I'm going into the 10th grade and the last time I decorated my room I was in the 7th grade, so I definately think it's time for a change. My room looks like it could belong to an 8 year old. It has light pruple walls and white furniture, and I want to paint my walls a darker color, maybe a dark red or dark blue or dark purple. I'll probably add some asian elements to it. I want it to look artsy and kind of oriental. I look to Peir 1 Imports and Ikea for ideas and inspiration. I also love to paint, so I might paint a mural, but I'm really not sure.

But the problem is, my mom won't let me replace my girly white furniture, and she won't let me repaint the furniture at all, and that's what's really making my room look young. I really wish I could get some new dark furniture, but I can't.

I've become much more mature since the last time I decorated my room, and I want my room to show my personality.

But how could I make my room look mature with this girly white furniture? Any ideas?

  1. i understand how u feel!! i have the exact same taste as you!! when i had to decorate my room, i used darkish green with like a golden yellow, to give somewhat of an asian feel, i also put a lot of chinese symbols and stuff like that around my room, but i think that the white furniture is gonna make that asian feel almost impossible to acomplish!.....u can try to go for a very refreshing style, and girly 2....... like the one in this link

  2. Dark is depressing, which is not the same thing as being grown up, but close....

I'd go for white walls and put up several large Asian art pieces.

Get a large Quan Yin to put in a corner where she is visible when you enter the room, or maybe by your window.

Put an Asian theme print spread on the bed, covers on the chairs, and curtains on the windows.

Add some bamboo in a large pot.

Asian theme throw rugs should be good at strategic places on the floor.

Find some SAFE light covers and lamps that go with the theme. Cost Plus used to have things like that ~ haven't been there in awhile.

On the shelves, put a couple of medium to large Asian decorations and several books on Asian art, mythology and culture.

  3. If your mom loves your furniture so much, let her live with it!

Since she won't let you change it, ask her to swap it --for her bedroom furniture!

Maybe then, she will change her mind and let you do something creative.

  4. If you have white furniture, you should try having green walls to make it look fresh and clean.  If you're going for an Asian look, try a red (burgendy) or orange and add chocolate colors to give it a rustic look and make it look older.  Also, you could convince your mom to let you stain your furniture.  If you do that, maybe she could help and feel better about painting it.

  5. Add some polka dots!

  6. Since you cannot get rid of the white furniture, make it work.  White furniture looks good in a tropical/Caribbean style room, whereas you would need darker woods/blacks for the asian.  The Caribbean style would also make it look more light and airy...to get some decorating ideas for this style, I would go onto a travel site and search the Caribbean hotels and look at their rooms :-)

  7. what's wrong with it, just keep it that way; if i could have i would have, but we moved

  8. Add some real flowers and a house plant.

    Good Luck. (:

  9. Just by painting ur walls would help accent ur room to look completely different. If u really have to keep the furniture, minimize it. take out what u dont want/ dont need and hide it in the attic or another room. Next, definately paint ur room. prolly be best to stay clear of dark reds. Its hard to find the right shade n when u do, lighting makes a huge impact. I'd personally go w/ the dark blue it would help accent the white furniture better. next get rid of all toys and teenie bop'r posters.. murals of asian plants n artwork would help ur room a lot. candles, bamboo etc..

  10. here what i suggest  you do.  is paint a base coat maybe   a light   tan color  , then paint your  mural maybe  based on  India, like a temple ......   add some  palm trees  .....

even a gold color  the Asians    love gold

remember ma ken it too dark, will feel  depression...

so mix and match a two tone ...... light & dark

google asain art . you will get some  great ideas on line .

  11. Yikes, my immediate thought was to paint the furniture black, but darn it you cant...

First replace your bedset with something more grown up

then you can put new k**b on dressers and drawers to make the look change. I would pick a bedding set with browns and blues or blacks and reds. Bed Bath and beyond should have a good selection along with your local department stores. Then you can pick new decorations to match your bedding. Lose pink, purple, and orange to lose your p*****n bedroom. Also mute colors are more grown up, like sage, tan, rust, light yellow, brown, aqua/ turquoise, and light red. Unless you really like oriental theme, don't do it. It is wayy overdone.
