Some of my favorite reading and writing integrated activities: 2nd and 3rd grade students high functioning

Family Scrapbook. We did research on our family - basic stuff and used a bunch of skills like interviewing, time lines, personal narrative etc... We researched ethnicity and concept of.. reading lots on what kids termed their culture.  Outlining what culture was.... Read lots of books where culture wasn't stereotyped or defined. We integrated this with art also - creating family trees and such.

This year I am going to work on procedural writing. We are going to create a class book on the jobs we have in our classroom. It's a great way for students to understand their audience. I'll probably integrate technology by using digital pics and stuff.

Reading - not so much a project rather something fun. I like to give my kids lists of books that have been turned into movies and they read them and do a little creative book report/skit about the book.
