Question:

What could be causing my migraines?

For the past 2 weeks I feel like I have a headache in my eye. I had no idea what the pain was until my mother told me it was a migraine. I rarely get these but lately I've been getting them every couple of days. Can anyone explain what may be causing them and what I can do to alleviate the pain? Taking a nap and an Advil seems to work but it takes a while.

  1. Migraine is believed to be caused by changes in the blood vessels in the brain. there are alot of things that could be causing your migraines so am goin to list a few,

stress,,lack of food or infrequent meals,,overtiredness,,changing sleep patterns,,extreme emotions such as anger or grief,,,physical activities,,loud noices,,, bright or flickering lights,,, strong perfumes,, extreme heat or cold,,

most people have not just 1 but a combination of these causes

    thought that would help,,

  2. Hormones can cause migraines--I'm happy for you that Advil works for you.  I had a total hysterectomy for other reasons, but lo and behold I quit having migraines!!!!!!!!   :)

You should probably consult a neurologist, a physician who is familiar with migraines and all their variations.  He also could give you some tips on how to alleviate them, ameliorate them, or something more effective than Advil for after you get one.  Oft times if you can catch it (it sounds as though you are having auras as well and can sort of tell you're going to have one) before it becomes full blown, you can circumvent it.  Worth the effort.

  3. i know its weird but the weather can cause many migranes. my family gets them a lot. it could also be a lack of something that you usually eat or drink. lack of caffine is a really good example for migranes.

  4. I've suffered from chronic headaches and migraines for 9 years. They've tried several types of medications and none of worked. Well - actually the ones that did were expensive and insurance didn't cover. Anyway, I quit taking birth control and the headaches/migraines stopped. The other thing that works for a friend of mine is eating protein every 3 hours (slice of cheese, a few peanuts - something little). My doctor said this is a very effective way to prevent headaches. The other thing I use (which I believe is the best natural way) is using natural lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint oils either in a bath or you can buy natural headache blends at you local supplement/naturals store. I also think Bath & Bodyworks has something also. I hope this helps. I know your pain. Good luck!

  5. Firstly, have an eye exam as soon as possible. You need to rule out Glaucoma - which is an eye disease that causes increased pressure inside your eyeball and causes blindness.

Migraines take MANY forms - one of which is called an ocular migraine. With migraines - there is usually a family history... or a family history of depression of all things! It seems migraines and depression are closely linked to variances in serotonin levels in the brain. This can be compounded by variances in female hormones as well; so your bouts of migraine many very well pass with age.

Watch closely what you eat. There are foods known to trigger migraines. Examples are wine (amines in wine), aged cheeses, MSG (watch your chinese and frozen prepared foods), processed meats (nitrates in smoked meats, lunch meat, hot dogs), many kinds of nuts, and any food that ferments (I love Kim Chi and sauerkraut but it's migraine city for me!) .

Stress will bring on migraines - but more likely the onset will come AFTER the stress. That's why so many people will have a migraine on the weekend after a stressful week at work.

Here are some links... hang in there!!
