We just moved into a new (used) log home in the country. It has a crawlspace. Everything is damp feeling and it is driving me crazy !! What can I do?

  1. High humidity and lack of airflow. A humidifier will help.

  2. The most probable cause causing condensation is not enough airflow in your crawl space, and moisture is coming through the floor area. Be sure that you have enough foundation vents and that they are all fully open. (Check, also, the attic to be sure it has proper airflow.) If, after doing all of that and the problem persists, lay 6 mil poly on the ground in the crawl space to create a moisture barrier.

Keep the foundation vents open even in the winter except in the most extreme low temps. (I never close mine unless we have continuous temps of below 25*, but make sure all of your water lines are insulated.)

A dehumidifier is only a temporary solution and will only increase your electrical bill.

  3. Get a dehumidifier.  It will pull the moister out and you can set it to how much you want.
