So yesterday I tried starting my car it just keeps turning over then it started, but right away it turned off. I found out if I keep my foot on the gas(when it stats) and keep it above idle it will stay on *** long as I don’t take my foot off the gas. So would could be the doing this? The carburetor? Distributor?

  1. It would help to know what kind of car, what year model, engine....etc?

  2. It could be carburator. or I think, Ur engine does not equal between air and gas. do you know what I mean?I the  engine air is not enough. Engine is hard to keep turning on.just tuning the air come in then it could be fine.

  3. fuel filter fuel treatment would be a good place to start

  4. it could be the gas filter restricting the flow of fuel.

  5. what kind of car?.....but a faulty idle air control motor could cause this...among other things...but i would start there

  6. Are all of your air hoses connected?? That happened to me one time, it's a long shot but good luck.

  7. it sounds like a vacuum leak and by looking at the picture i think that i can see that. the vacuum line to the brake booster is not in place.

  8. It's a 43 year old car.  No one can diagnose without seeing it.  Since you can drive it, drive it to your mechanic and get it fixed.  May be just a idle adjust needed.

  9. See if the vehicle will run with the carburetor breather off, If it does replace the air filter!

Check the choke to see if it is sticking or it is not manually set for starting!

Use a s***w driver to hold the carburetor open as it may be sticking

Check the fuel filter and or start with fresh gas!

If these suggestions don`t help locate a repair manual possibly in the library!
