Question:

What could be the cause of a squeaking noise in my bathtub?

My bathtub makes a rather loud squeaking noise when I get in or lean against the sides.

It started off as a very minor squeak, but now it is rather loud.

I haven't removed the side panels yet. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

  1. Plastic baths tend to do this.  It is the movement of the bath.

  2. It sounds like your tub isn't "set" properly.  If it is a tub with side panels as in a "hot tub" or similar tub then there should be a foam base for the tub to be sitting on.  This base may be loose in one place or another.  The solution (only if it is accessible and will be covered back up again) is to get a can of expanding foam and spray it around the gaps you see (or where you can see the tub is not supported)  DO NOT SPRAY TO FILL AS THE FOAM IS DESIGNED TO EXPAND.  If the foam does not have an easy "escape route" you can run the risk of cracking a fiberglass tub.  As long as the foam can expand and be trimmed away after it dries this is safe to do.

The other thing to do to check to see if the tub is "set" properly is to look at it when it is empty and then watch it as you fill it and see if it shifts or moves, it is not supposed to.
