Question:

What could be the problem on a 2001 Jetta concerning the turning signal?

Whenever I use my tuning signal, it stays on for a few seconds (the clicks and the lights work as if normal). Then it stops, along with the turning lights on the exterior of the car. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt, but it it always makes the clicking sound once.

The hazards work fine, too.

Thank you!

  1. The hazard switch in the dash needs to be replaced.  The turn signal relay and hazard switch are one unit.  This is a dealer part but is fairly cheap and easy to replace.

  2. The mechanism is dirty(greasy) behind the steering wheel.  You need to pull the wheel off to clean the points of grease and maybe oxidation

  3. This is most likely due to a malfunctioning indicator relay.  Since it is a relay and your car is relatively new, it's probably going to cost a few bucks.

But before you spend the money, double check that your ground strap is not getting corroded or somehow loosening up.  It should run from the battery to the car body, and then from the car body to the motor, all on one strap.  If this cable gets corroded or lose, it will create all kinds of electrical oddities.

Don't go to the dealer to get he really if you can avoid it.  I'm sure it's a dealer-only part though so Autozone isn't going to carry the thing.  However, if you join the free VW Vortex forum online you will find many people to talk to about the problem.  Lots of people are constantly parting out this cars and listing the stuff for very affordable prices.

    Good Luck!
