  1. Sounds like fluid allright--let me explain.  There is two screens.  If any fluid is spilled or ran down to the bottom  and dissappeared into the frame It is "wicked" up between the two screens.  Because the screens are essentially optics lenses you will get no light passing through at all.  This will only happen along the bottom edge.  It will allmost allways look like the silohuette of a mountain with minor variations.  If its water it may evaporate over time and leave a residue at the edge.  If its anything else  it will eventually dry but the black mark will not disapper.  In the case of hard alchohol it will melt the plastic and permanantly deform it.  Cleaning this to perfection is impossible in all cases--water causing the least after-cleaning issues.  Most times was caused by kids that didnt want to admit it--or didnt know it happened.  Pop a soda/beer can and get a couple of drops of spray---thats all that it takes sometimes (the less liquid the smaller the mountain).  Most often happens with Mitsubishis.

BTW--I've never heard of an "element" in a DLP and if the engineer is referring to one of the mirrors failing it would be a tiny pixel size spot (black/green/red/blue/white) And I've repaired these every day since they've been available and have never seen a stuck or defective mirror.  I have heard rumors of stories though.

*********  If you push on the screen does it look like liquid getting sqeezed---up and down?  then it is liquid.  Allmost everyone that has had this happen had no idea how it did happen.  One couldnt understand how something that smelled like shooters got in there--niether did her teenage daughters---obviously from accidents---

  2. Either you have dirt or a bug inside the TV or one of your picture elements in the DLP display just died.  It happens.  If the TV is still new and under warranty you might get it repaired for free if too many of these elements appear.  Depends on the warranty and what it says.
