What could be the reason why my 1986 Ford Aerostar mini-van wouldn't start?

I never encountered a problem with my auto until recently, it wouldn't sttart.

Our resident mechanic always insists that I should rev up the engine before shutting the aircon, headlights and engine down. I refuse to believe it cause I read in a car manual that drivers should avoid doing that. And now it's like I'm the one at fault. It's making me confused!

We assumed that the battery just needs to be charged and so we did, but still the engine won't start.

I need a better explanation from car enthusiasts! THanks!

  1. First of all, Never rev an engine before shutdown- not good for bearings as well as alot of other things.  Does it crank?  Does it die while cranking?  Have your battery load tested by taking it out and going to a local auto parts store or shop.  Are the terminals clean?  If it is low on volts, will it charge on a battery?  If yes, I would look at the charging system.  If the battery already held 12-14 volts, then look at the starting system.  If it is cranking but not starting,  check for fuel problems, as well as a spark.  If there is a spark, then it more than like is toward fuel problems.  Is the fuel pump fuse good?  Is your fuel filter clean.  Do you have gas or is your  gauge bad?  These are things that I would check to try and troubleshoot.  Best Wishes

  2. does it turn over? if yes you need to check for fuel and spark. If it doesnt turn over it could be anything from the batterie, connections, starter relay or the starter. older ford have alot of problemd with all of the above. luckily they are all something that can be done in your driveaway

  3. could be the crankshaft? although there are alot of causes of the failed engine startup.
