What could be wrong? and Can it be fixed?

I have a old computer that my dad gave to me its over 10 years old its so old it has windows 3.1 and it never had any problems before until 4 years ago. I get a problem with the start up sometimes I would turn it on and it will do the rewinding thing with the numbers but it will stop half way and then something comes up it will say(Video Configuration change Press any key to continue) but when I do press any key it will take me right into the bios and I was told when ever i get in there to get get out right away so what could be wrong? and can it be fix? like its still good for playing games and writing stories.

The cheapest thing that you can do is reformat the hard drive first and then reinstall the same version of windows that came with it because you most likely do not have enough memory to run a newer version like windows 95 or 98 second edition......and dont even try putting anything newer than windows 98..............
