What could be wrong with my car?

No money for a mechanic. Parked it goes.

Driving down my street, almost home and it makes a "revving, rrrr rrrr" sound when I push a little on drive again to make it go faster. It won't go. Just sits there. Had to push it in neutral to have a neighbor push me home.

How much might the problem cost? It also guzzles gas. Its a 1999 Mercury Sable.

  1. Did you run out of gas? If not it sounds like a fuel problem, maybe your engine is not receiving gasoline. Do you smell gas, If you haven't in done so recently try changing out the fuel filter. Next I would check if the fuel pump is working. You can generally hear the fuel pump come on when you first stick your key in the ignition and click it once so its on 'ON' position. If you don't hear it then thats where you want to look. If you do, try checking your spark plugs/ distributor. you need FUEL + SPARK+ AIR to make your engine work properly

    Good Luck

  2. If I am reading what you wrote correctly, you pressed on the gas pedal and the engine revved but the car did not accelerate?  If that is the case it it your transmission.  First thing you can do is check the fluid and make sure there is some and if not fill it and see if you can find where it is leaking from.  If that is not the case, something is wrong with the transmission and you will need to have it towed to wherever you want to get it fixed.  If the transmission needs rebuilding it's gonna run 1500-2000 to do.
