What could be wrong with my dogs toes?

My black lab has been biting at her toes, as if they itch. I notice that in between her toes it is pink and looks irritated. I can't call the vet until Monday, so anyone know what I could do from home?

  1. Spray bitter apple on her paws so she won't make things worse.  Also, biting and l*****g of the feet is sometimes a sign of allergies.  Do you have her on a food that contains corn or wheat?  That maybe the problem, although not always.  It can be seasonal allergies or even allergies to something in your home such as new carpet or any # of cleaning products.  Good luck with your Lab's foot fetish.

  2. my dog gets a lot of ingrown hairs between his toes that we have to pluck and on occasion lance.  As i cannot see your dog i cannot tell you if this is what has happened.  If you have a local pet store they have an "itchstick" that is a basically dog hydrocortizone cream (anti-itch stuff).  Try it for the weekend until you can get your dog into see the vet.  Your dog may have an ingrown hair, a cut, or some sort of rash.

  3. its a dog, they have lived in the wild for millions of years, it will be fine.

  4. It could be a number of things:

    Fleas

    Allergies

Soap left in after a bath...

  5. Dogs will chew on their feet and l**k them when they've allergies. That doesn't mean it isn't something beyond allergies. The pinkness between her toes could easily be an allergic reaction to grass, insects, food...lots of things. You could try giving your dog some Benadryl...won't hurt her and if it is allergies, it will help until you see the Vet. With Benadryl the dosage is 1mg for every pound and Benadryls come typically in 25 mg caps...so you'll need to do the math according to your dogs weight. Be aware, they will be drowsy. I have a 60 lb. Airedale Terrier and when she's itchy I give her two capsules and it seems to help her allot.

Another good thing about Benadryl is its CHEAP...buy the generic diphenhydramine for about $3.00 a box...it's good to keep in your purse anyway for yourself or who/what ever!

  6. her nails might not be cut short enough. that is a common problem, so be sure to check it out. you could try calling another vet- there are plenty working on saturday. in fact, my dog is having an appointment tomorrow (saturday)!
