Question:

What could be wrong with my garage door opener?

After a severe electric storm on the weekend, my electronic garage door lifters aren't working. The electric line is underground from the house to the garage 100 feet away. Inside the garage there's a box with a steady yellow light on, but no power to the rest of the garage. I assume if there's a light is on the little box on the wall, power is getting from the house to that box, but not from the box to the rest of the garage. There's a toggle switch on the little box on the wall. I press it in and the light goes off. When I release it the yellow light comes back on, but still no power. Is there anything else I can check? What could be happening?

  1. check your circuit breaker to the garage

  2. Check you fuses or breaker switches. Even if the breakers look ok turn off one by one and then back on again to see if you can reset the breaker switch. Or call you electric company to do a safety check.

  3. The little box sounds like a blind GFCI. It works like a GFCI receptacle without the plug..Also check the breaker in your house. Turn them off and then on again. Take a flathead screwdriver and try nudging the switch inward to see if you can get it to stick,it has probably gone bad and needs replaced. You are welcome to contact me ,as I am a Journeyman Electrician.

  4. sounds like the breaker may have been tripped to the overhead door openers. try flipping it off all the way then on. it is possible that the storm may have "knocked out" your circuit boards and fried your openers.

start with the easy things first. then call the pros.
