Question:

What could be wrong with my girlfriend's kitten?

MY girlfriend got a kitten recently and it was a bit active at first, other than it being very cowardly. But almost 2 weeks after she seems to be sick.

It's eyes are low, it won't move much, and seems to be having problems deficating.

We don't have any money to get her checked out, I was wondering if any of you have any helpful advice on treating her.

Are there products I could buy at petsmart or petco?

  1. If she cant affored to take her pet to the vet I suggest giving it to the shelter. YOU PEOPLE NEED TO HAVE A BACKUP PLAN!!!

Also, the cat might not be eating enough or he could be contipated. Try rubbing a cole wash cloth under his private to suggest pooping.

  2. The kitten sounds EXTREMELY sick.  It is crucial you get her to a vet ASAP.  Don't let this kitten die.  Most vets accept payment plans.

  3. What kind of food have you been feeding her? Also has the kitten been vaccinated? She may have distemper - some cats showing signs of lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, fever and sever dehydration. If you don't get this fixed soon then the kitten could die. You might be able to get these vaccines at petsmart or petco but if not you will have to take her to a vet. Also if you don't have enough money to take her to a vet you shouldn't own a pet if you can't afford its healthcare. It's just like taking care of a child. You have to feed it, clean up after it and make sure its healthy. Some other possible things are feline respiratory disease (symptoms are sneezing, tearing, inflammation of and a discharge from eyes and nose) this is a serious disease if it is in a kitten also. Another one is Feline Infectious Peritonitis ( FIP) which sometimes don't show any symptoms but are usually mild. This is also fatal in kittens and young cats, symptoms are poor appetite, weight loss, depression, abdominal swelling and a chronic fever that doesnt go away with or without antibotics. Hope this helps!

  4. It sounds like she is very ill.  It could be a number of things, she might have a bowel obstruction, or she might have swallowed something she shouldn't have, or she could be severely dehydrated.  Unfortunately she needs surgery if it is a bowel obstruction and there is no treatment for her unless she sees a vet, but I do have a solution for that if you are willing to go this route  http://www.carecredit.com/index.html

  5. If you live in Britain, and are eligible, there is a pet's charity that will pay for the first £100 of treatment.  The 'PDSA' requires you register with them and pay £5 every 6 months.

  6. If you do not get a proper diagnosis, your cat could die.  It could be something simple to treat like coccidia, but untreated it could kill your kitten one night.   Cats reach an odd 'point of no return' - where they are alive and moving and looking around, but they will die no matter what you do.  Don't wait until it gets to that point.

It's illegal in most states to deny a pet medical care when it is sick.  It's FAR more expensive to pay the neglect fine than to visit the vet.

If you can't afford the vet, take the cat to a shelter immediately so it can be treated and sent to a good home that has a budget to properly afford it.  A cat is not a toy.  You can't scrap it when it starts to cost money.  A cat is a commitment you are obviously not willing and/or able to take on at this time in your life.

Your cat will need to visit the vet many times in it's lifetime.   I budget in at least once a year for emergencies per cat - just in case.  Take it from me - I'm a full time pet sitter, and a pet foster mom (only out here because I'm looking for what illness my current foster might have).  And I have 3 of my own cats.

  7. it sounds like parvo virus.. you need to take her to a vet.. animal shelters can give your cat vaccinations pretty cheap.. but do it soon, parvo virus can make the cat lose it's appetite, leading to anorexia..which there is no treatment for.. try petmeds.com.. there may be an over the counter product you can buy.. either Flagyl, or baytril.. both of which help with bacteria in the intestine.. You can also get "nutri-cal" at petsmart or petco.. It is a vitamin supplement that gives them more energy and will help keep the cats appetite up. Please do something soon.

  8. If you don't want your kitten to die you need to suck it up and take her to a vet.  Having an animal costs money.  If you didn't understand that you shouldn't have gotten one.  Your kitten is seriously ill and only a vet can help her now.  Do the right thing.  They often will help out with payment arrangements.

  9. If you guys have no money.... WHY GET A PET?

WHY GET ONE, IF YOU CAN BARELY TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES. Talk to the vet and see if you can do a payment plan. A pet is like a child, you can't always assume they are always going to be healthy.
