What could be wrong with my transmission?

I have a 1979 pontiac bonneville and it wa leaking transmission fluid.I had the transmission taken out and the seals,gasket,and filter replaced.The transmission is still leaking fluid,the mechanic says it could be tne transmission pump.What else could it be?Should i just get it rebuilt?

  1. i had a bonneville just like yours, but mine was a 78. drop the inspection plate on the bell and if it,s got alot of transmission fluid in it, then it,s probably the front seal was put in crooked. i had a leak in mine too and it was a crack in the case above the accumilator valve on the side.


  2. i agree with pedro, get a full refund from your "mackanik" and take it somewhere that specializes in transmissions and has a warranty

  3. you didn't mention specifically which seals, etc that were replaced... how bad was the leak?  what I would like to recommend is clean out the transmission area, start the engine & drive a few miles, thereafter place it on a lift & see if you're able to spot the leak...  all the best...

  4. your mechanic is a hack...with new seals and pan gasget there should b NO leaks...dont rebuild it unless its not shifting right...ask friends/coworkers where a good tranny only shop is...you want someone who works on trannys 50 hours a week
