Question:

What could be wrong with our new puppy?

We recently adopted a 7 week old puppy from the local animal shelter. We're guessing he's part shepherd and part chow. A couple days after we got him he started coughing alot. I called the shelter and they said they have a couple dogs with kennel cough. So the next morning I took him right to the vet. They gave him antibiotics and sent him home. The medicine helped up until yesterday. He wasn't himself at all. He later through up his breakfast in whole chunks and started hiding, which like I said wasn't like him. He won't eat or drink. Took him to the vet the next morning. They tested him for Parvo and it came back negative. They gave him IV's and gave me a special food and some peptobismol for dogs. What else can I do? Does anyone know? Any help my fiance and I would deeply appreciate. We really love this puppy!

  1. we got our puppy from a petland store and he had a bad kennel cough. we got it treated many times and it finally worked. he threw up for a while too....maybe it is his food too? have u changed it a lot because if you change a dogs food a lot they can get sick trying to adjust...if not maybe his body doesn't go well witht he food you got him.

  2. Your vet is the best person to ask , I don't think they would have sent him home if they didn't think he would be all right.Just follow the vets instructions and if he isn't better in a couple of    days take him back. Hope everything turns out great for you and your puppy.

  3. the shelter should be notified, they shouldn't put up any pet up for adoption until they have come out of quarantine.tell them about your problem they of course will tell you to bring it back and get a new pup, tell them you already love the pup but wish for them to treat the pup since most shelters have vets and staff on hand or they have their own vets that they take their dogs to, I hope.you shouldn't be making out of pocket expenses on a pup that shouldn't even have been adopted out.

  4. if you smoke that could bother her too we do and we have to go out side or our lil dogs get sour throats and cough, but does sound like kennel cough, call your vet because she could have a reaction to the antibiotics

  5. kennel cough makes dogs throw up their food and not want to eat or play. it sounds like that is what he has. kennel cough depending on how severe it is can be hard to get rid of. antibiotics do not always help right away, esp. liquid antibiotics. in the meantime keep him away from other dogs because kennel cough is highly contagious and a b*tch to get rid of.

  6. why don't u try buying dog food or canned food that are formulated for sensitive stomach dogs? or u can buy small bites dog food so that ur dog doesn't throw up in chunks. just remember, too strong air conditioning can make dogs to have hard time breathing and coughing.

  7. any cough isnt good so i would say take him to your vet---now

  8. not much beside what your vet does.

home remidies are NOT always good.

just treat him like a prince.

thats really all you can do

    good luck

  9. Did they tell you that the parvo test can be a false negative? it does happen. See another vet
