  1. Elephants do not damage human property on purpose. The so called human property in terms of land was once the habitat of elephants. Elephants need great space and when humans start building houses near forests or flatten certain portion of their habitat they come in conflict with each other.

So when people living in these areas grow certain crops the elephants are instinctively driven out of hunger to eat them. When people try to scare them there is chaos. Elephants will instinctively attack their attackers as they may have babies with them and for their protection as well.

In this process houses or any other things which comes into their contact will get destroyed.

Certain male elephants are in their mating season and such one's get angry very fast. A slight provocation can have disastrous consequences.

  2. Well, i do not know the particular incident that you are talking about, but I know that elephants are naturally destructive.  They often tear down trees to get to higher branches or use the trees to scratch or sharpen tusks.  one explanation for elephants destroying human property is that the humans currently live an area where they elephants traditionally lived and the elephants are treating the human property as they would their natural habitat.
