  1. This completely depends on the cause of your knee pain. In my case, I overtrained. Tightness in my IT-bands was causing serious pain once I ran 2-3 miles. I took almost a month off before I finally saw a doctor and got back on track.

I recommend you get a referral to go see a specialist ASAP. Don't go to your PCP; they will take the conservative route and tell you not to run the race even if you really can.

    Good luck!

  2. That famous ancient Chinese runner, Confuscious, once said, "is better to lose 2 weeks and heal the limb, than make pain and injury worse"

    Maybe I'm paraphrasing there.....

  3. Losing time is not as bad as not being able to run.

Missing 1 or 2 weeks at week 4 is not going to keep you from running the marathon.

You should be back on track in about 2 weeks after you resume training.

  4. Depends on what is the cause of your knee injury.  If it's a overuse injury, you probably need the time off.  If you are running incorrectly, It will give you time to figure out what went wrong.  If it's where you run, that can be fixed.  Stay off the side of the road.  Run in the grass or on trails.
