  1. Paul the Apostle wennt to Greece and found there that the Greeks worshipped a God called 'the Unknown God' . He then told them about Jesus and explained about the God they did not know.

In the Old Testament God gave his name as YHWH (Yahweh), and in the New Testament Jesus said 'tell them that 'I am that I am' has sent you'. It seems that we need a name to identify what we are thinking about or identifying. If we did not have a name we would probably make one: In English, bibles often use 'LORD' as a translation for YHWH.

If we neither were given nor invented a name, it would be difficult to write about or talk about because we would have no noun to use. If we knew what this 'immortal intelligence' was like we would have to say 'that immortal intelligence who created the world' or 'that immortal intelligence's only Son who came to die on the cross for our sins'. 'God' and 'Jesus' is much easier!

Besides that, it would lead to confusion because if I described a car badly, you might think I was describing a totally different car. And my description could even be a lie. I think that the confusion people have due to the number of religions-and some quite close to the truth-would be made worse if we were unable to identify God.

We might ignore such a being as being irrelevant to us. When we meet someone we ask their name so we can remember them and identify them. The Bible says that Jesus came to make God known to us. A God who understands us and cares about us has given us a name for himself to help us. He is a personal God, not a remote 'immortal intelligence'.

To some extent, your problem already exists, because the word 'God' is used by different religions to describe different ideas of God. I call God 'God' because I know who I am describing, and those I'm speaking to usually do. However, when speaking with people who might have a totally different conception of God, I would need to clarify who I was talking about by describing God and what he has done.

'There is power in the name of Jesus.' The name of Jesus identifies him. If I call on you for assistance in a crowd, I call your name. LIkewise, if I call on God's help for healing, help or guidance, or if I want to worship him, I use his name.

  2. It could play a game of golf with some other nameless wonder.
