What could have happened?

I damaged my vertibrae on mothers day, horse accident of course. and I havnt been riding for awhile. Recently I started getting up on the horse that tossed me (24 yo TB) and have been riding bareback.

But my question is about my 4 yo QH. I was super busy a 2 weeks before my accident so I didnt really get out to the barn. and then the weeks passed. And no one had gotten up on him.

Two days ago, I decided I was finally going to tack him up, and take him for a spin.

I had been working with him in the round pen, and you can tell that he respect me now. But before, when I tried to take him in the barn to cross tie him, hed freak out and what not. So I just did it in the arena, he still freaked out. Hated the saddle and everything.

But when I put the pad on and then the saddle, he just stood there like a champ! took the bit without a second thought.

Im really stumped as to why he was so good, since he hasnt had anything done in a while. And should I wear a brace for my back

  1. I think he was prolly good because he had not been worked in a while..and he was bored..and a lot of horses that get worked a lot just get sassy.

And i would definately wear a brace..what exactly happened to your back....bulging disk..fracture??

  2. i think you should have some support to your back

the horse,as a youngster,is proberbly enjoying having something to do again! a while off work can teach a horse a lot. having nothing to do can get boring and he is proberbly enjoying his role now. having the time off will also have allowed some things to "click" in his mind, such as the saddle is not to be hated and so on.

  3. He could have enjoyed the vacation, he could have been hot or tired, or any number of things.  I wouldn't count on his old ways not returning soon.

As for the back injury, you don't seem to have a clear idea of the nature of the injury.  If the doctor okayed you to ride the horse at a walk, it means only that...no antics.  Ride the safer horse and cut your risks.  Wearing a back brace is something to discuss with your doctor...if it is of no particular benefit, why spend the money and go through the discomfort?  In many cases back braces are beneficial, depending on what activities you plan to participate in, so it's likely your doctor will think it is a good idea, whether or not it is necessary.

EDIT: I just read the details.  A fracture takes 6 months to a year to heal....you don't say where it is, but if it is a lumbar vertebra, you can and should wear a brace if you are going to ride.  Don't ride unless you are sure the horse won't break into a trot, which could reinjure you or even displace a fracture (depending on the type).

  4. Wear a brace and he probably will be gentle because he knows he hurt you!!

  5. no

  6. Horses are very good and knowing your emotions and telling whther you are confident or hurt etc. Maybe he just knew that you weren't 100% and so didnt take advantage of the situation?
