OK here are the facts. we keep our pet rabbit in a cage indoors, but my wife put it outside with the cage and all for a short while until the cage was going to get cleaned. The bunny was doing good outside, it was in the shade and had plenty of water. The last time my wife checked on it was 3 PM and it was doing good. Around 6 pm I got home and shortly after that I walked outside and found the rabbit in the cage minus its head. it looks like some animal bit its head off and pulled it out through the opening where the feeder went. It's a metal cage so whatever it was couldn't get inside, but it somehow got a hold of the rabbit's head. the hole is only about an inch and a half by 3-4 inches. We have a dog outside, but we don't think he is the culprit. We've had him inside with the rabbit many times and although he has been rough with a rabbit before, lately he has been very mellow (he's pretty old). Also, if the dog did it, it would be pretty obvious.

  1. How small was this rabbit?  A hawk could do it easily.

  2. I don't know if you have them around where you are, but weasles and other things from that family would make sense, and if they could get the head out, they could get in through that same hole.  Could it have been a snake?

    So sorry about the bunny

  3. what are the bars on one cage like?  sounds really odd to me..

any thoughts that it was a neighbour kid?  some have troubles and do c**p like this...

cats mostly leave rabbits alone, we have 5 cats, NONE of whom have ever touched the rabbit...

the dog MIGHT have licked the blood off.. but as your dog has been around the bunny its unlikely

a fox maybe? or a FERRET!!

Ferrets are Bred to hunt and kill rabbits!

here is a picture of our bunny -sadly she died recently

  5. Wow, well I doubt it was the dog, since you said the dog has been around it already and has seen the family around it he probably knows not to hurt it.  He wouldn't be barking if he was attacking the rabbit, so he was probably barking at whatever killed it.  Is there any neighborhood boys around that could have done it?  I would say some kind of weasel maybe.  I found this website maybe it has some information http://www.saferpets.co.uk/KeepingYourRa...

Sorry about your rabbit, hope you figure out what happened.
